Karl Stuart’s “Much-Loved” 750 Gixer
My name is Karl Stuart and I’m from Bolton in Lancashire. On the 5th November 2007, I was involved in an accident at work that resulted in the loss of my left hand and forearm.
At the time, I owned a Suzuki GSXR 750Y. I have always had a motorbike in one form or another since the age of seventeen. I thought at the time that this accident would be the end of motor biking for me.
I remember speaking to the surgeons about my passion for motor biking and that I wanted to ride again. I have had numerous operations right up to August 2009 to achieve my goal. The dream I have of riding my much-loved GSXR kept me going throughout this very traumatic time in my life.
Due to the extent of my injury and resulting surgery, it is only this year that I was able to be fitted with a prosthetic limb and specially made hand for riding.
I’d heard of the NABD before and became a member shortly after my accident. The information available and reading about other members was really inspiring. I decided to apply for a grant and was successful.
The grant enabled me to obtain a K-Lever 2 from those clever guys at Kliktronic which has the front brake controlled by the upper short lever and lower, longer lever controls the clutch. The K-Lever adaption has worked really well and also looks good on the bike.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the NABD for the provision of the K-Lever.
I would also like to say a big thank you to my best mate Paul Gardner (Shafty) who did the adaption work (with me assisting). Also thank you to my long suffering partner Joanne.
Thanks again to all at the NABD.
